The main lake at Mount Gambier is called Blue Lake, rather than Lake Gambier. Situated within a volcanic crater, the lake is at its most brilliant blue in the early months of the year, during summer. The reasons for this colour change aren't fully known, but recent research has suggested it's due to an abundance of white calcite forming near the surface of the lake, making the water appear brighter blue. This formation of white calcite occurs because, in spring, a thin layer of warm water forms at the surface, which cuts off deep circulation in the lake. This means that the algae which is concentrated near the surface during winter does not mix as well, reducing the aqua appearance. The pH of the surface water is modified by the degassing of carbon dioxide, which in turn promotes the calcite. The production of the calcite removes the humic acids from the water column - these humic acids increase the absorbency of light in the blue end of the spectrum.

When did mt gambier last erupt?

Mount Gambier was not a volcano, it was a mountain near several other volcanoes, however, the last erruption in this are was said to be about 17,000 years ago, the blue lake crater is still dormant at the moment, so this means it could errupt again, but this is very unlikely.

What are the activities in mt gambier?

I live in Mt. Gambier so I would know there is a public library next to mac's hotel right arcoss the street of the RSL. You can also eat at the RSL or the mac's hotel! Then there is the Valley Lakes park and a Vansittart park just as well. The Blue Lake is the tourist attraction so you can see that. Then we have the town hall in commercial street and the town hall is ugly but still. Commercial street has HEAPS of stores so I definately approve/ recommend of you going to commercial street. We have another tourist attraction that is not as big as the Blue Lake cause Blue Lake is the main tourist attraction but we have the centanary tower which you have to climb and that's soooo fun I climbed it with my family in 2007 so yeah. We also have the aquatic center but sadly it is closed and will be open intill October 2012 :( so I think that is it there is HEAPS more but I just can't remember at the moent so have alot of fun on your trip/holiday and I think you will have fun! ;) Bye!
