Among those referred to the most are The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and The Innocents Abroad. Mark Twain is a good writer due to his ability to combine literary elements. Mostly he combines satire, or mocking of other works of literature, with lots of humor in his books and still manages to have important topics and serious moments for a good mix and enjoyable reads.

He also was able to write in the voice of his characters. It was as if Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn were writing their books, not Twain.

Mark Twain was well travelled and held many different jobs during his life. This was combined with his keen observations and interactions with whoever he met. This allowed him to bring a sense of reality to situations and characters which an author who just has to imagine the interactions and events cannot duplicate. In addition his use of "story telling" English comes across even in his writing. Throughout his writing he is not afraid to point out the fallacies and conceits of human interaction.
