It is important because it is a holy city of Islam, the birth place of Prophet Muhammad.

One of the five pillars of Islam is Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims must perform at least once in their lives, if possible. Mecca is also important for this reason. And it's important because of the Kaaba.
