For generations, the "American Dream" has been etched into the imaginations of optimistic youths through stories of "rags to riches." The most remembered moment in American history, as told by any grade-school student, is the Civil War, September 11th, and perhaps "I Have a Dream," but on the 20th day of January 2009, American history will be amended with such caliber that perhaps for even centuries, the unveiling of the first non-Caucasian President will be hailed akin to a religious revelation. No longer will the story of an "American Dream" be told as a person's own determination to overcome hardships and achieve the impossible; rather, it will be pompously described as the audacity of a united nation to rise and elect the first Black President.

Democratic, Republican, Independent or neither, the citizens of this society arose to declare their beliefs, endowed rights and freedoms, and demands to the government during the instability and economic hardships placed on their shoulders. For the first time in history, the beliefs of our forefathers have been fulfilled. Each single phrase in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other worthy documents have been demonstrated to hold truth. Through the words "…all men are created equal," "…unalienable Rights," "…institute new Government," etc, our forefathers have laid bricks in a never ending path of social progression; without fault and ever-empowering, these rules have permitted the election of a President whom represents the corollary of the blood-shed, tears, and bravery of ancestors involved in slavery and centuries of discrimination. More importantly, it serves as a measure of the strength and soundness of the foundation from which this nation was built.

One may be inquired regarding the importance of this inauguration, and to an optimistic mind, it is because "a black man is president," to the struggling mind: "it is the beginning of new changes," but the real importance, at least to me, is the final proof of integrity of the United States of America. It is the admiration of a bold nation in which dreams become realities; and being involved in this great social advancement is a tasteful fruit of becoming what billions of people only dream of, an American Citizen.

The idea that a powerful ruler would give up his power peacefully at the end of his term is rare and was unheard of 200 years ago when the US began the practice, and it is still a special event. I do not know exactly why , but people like to have special ceremonies at special times. That is why we have ceremonies for weddings, funerals, commencements, holidays, church feast days, and so forth. The swearing in of the President and a new administration deserves special recognition and that is the inauguration is all about.

The Constitution requires that the President take the oath.

Why was this requirement put in?In the end, the President will do what he chooses to do and will justify it however he chooses, however, it is at least somewhat reassuring that the President swears to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the United States of America, which is what is needed for the United States to continue to function as a nation. With any luck the President will feel a moral obligation to do what he has sworn to do.
