not every sphinx has got its nose missing.the sphinx your probably thinking of it the one on the Giza plateau,by the pyramids.there are many theories as to what happened to them.most put it down to natural erosion.I've also heard a theory that Alexander the great ,when he conquered Egypt,wanted to make the monument less recognisable as Egyptian so he ordered the nose ,which was very noticable as African,to be hacked off.

∙ 15y agoWe must remember that the Sphinx nose got knocked out by a age as well as it is an object built many , many centuries ago and as it got weaker it peice the nose fell of. The desert sandstorms to play a part in it.
