The politicians want Taiwan to be separate from China and they tried to gain UN membership as Taiwan as opposed to Republic of China (they failed). During the Chinese civil war most Nationalists escaped to Taiwan and developed its economy but both governments claimed to be in control of both China and Taiwan. Eventually the Nationalists gave up the idea. There is constant conflict between Taiwan and China as Taiwan wants to declare independence. Taiwan buys weapons from US in order to protect themselves from a possible invasion.

∙ 8y agoAfter the defeat between 1948 and 1950 of China's ruling Kuomintang Party and its leader Chiang Kai-Shek, the Party's leadership and its remaining army fled to the island of Formosa and there established the new seat of the "Republic of China" which included mainland China, where the Communists were still seen by the Kuomintang leadership as usurpers and rebels. After worldwide recognition of mainland Communist China the island's leadership transformed the island to the independent State of Taiwan. Beijing however still sees it as part of all China and takes the position that the island therefore can never become independent from them. There is a constant 'war of intimidation' between the two Chinas, but at the same time China allows unlimited tourist travel to and from the island and there are active economic ties between the two.
Speaking of 'friendship' between the two would be overstating it, but for the time being both see the advantages of peaceful relations and economic co-operation over any efforts of war.
