The mouse is called the mouse because before it was wireless they were all corded and the cord was supposed to be the tail which makes it look a little bit like a mouse or a rat but rat would sound disgusting hence the name mouse

The pointer itself that is on the screen is called a cursor. the mouse is the hardware you buy that look like i tiny mouse with a tail that makes it so you can move the cursor. also on a laptop the "mouse"(that is built in) is called a tracker pad, mainly because its a pad and it tracks your fingers movement.

A computer mouse is an input device which allows a user to move a pointer on the screen with their hand and to click on its buttons to select things on the screen. It is called a mouse because of its shape. It has a rounded body much like a rodent, and it has a long skinny cord, much like the tail of a live mouse.

Well, just take a look at it! It's small, often gray, moves around a lot, and has a tail-like appendage.
