The eye is a complex organ that provides vision by converting the images projected onto the retina (the inside layer on the back of the eyeball) into electronic impulses and sending them to the brain. The hole in the front of the eyeball that allows the light into the eye is known as the pupil, and it is surrounded by the iris, the colored part of your eye.
A simple experiment that you can do at home will show why cheap sunglasses can be so damaging. Choose a room in your house that has few windows, or wait until evening so that the natural light is low. With the overhead lights on in the room, look in a mirror and notice the size of your pupil. They are small (constricted) because there is plenty of light. Now, turn the light off and wait about thirty seconds, then turn the light back on and look in the mirror again. Your pupils grows larger (they actually open more) where the light is poor, so more light will fall on the retina and allow a clearer image to form.
The problem arises when you wear a poor pair of sunglasses on a bright day. Because many cheap sunglasses are simply darkly tinted to look "cool," they don't provide any actual protection from the harmful rays of the sun (e.g., UV rays). In reality, all these cheap glasses are doing is allowing more UV rays to strike your retina, which could cause even more damage than just going out without any glasses.
