Hip or valley jack? In a hip jack, the stock is shortened 1/2 the 45 degree thickness of the hip rafter (1-1/16" for dimensional lumber). Then, another plumb line is brought half the thickness of the jack's stock (3/4" for dimensional lumber) back towards the seat cut. The centre of the stock is marked on the edge where the first plumb line comes down, and then the lines squared across the edge to give the shape of the cut where it meets the hip rafter. It's really only shortened once, the second line is to mark the shape of the cut. It appears to be 45 degrees, but really it's not...

A truss is a prefabricated piece of frame work that is installed at the site, but actually assembled somewhere else. A rigid framework, as of wooden beams or metal bars, designed to support a structure, such as a roof. A rafter on the other hand, is a single piece of wood, usually a 2x4, that is part of the supporting structure of a roof that is built on site.
