Why are time zones necessary?

Time zone maps are important because you need to know what the time will be if you're traveling somewhere, so that you can sleep earlier or later, depending on where you're going. Like I went to China one time, and I had a really hard time sleeping because of the time difference (mostly because I didn't sleep on the plane ride there).

Time zones are necessary for commerce. At one time each town could set it's own time. Using this method it was difficult to schedule anything that was outside one's town. The railroads drove the process that we use today. Each time zone takes up 15 degrees of the 360 degrees of the earth's circumference.

Not only helping to coordinate times with other around the globe but it also helps determine the time of day. If we did not use time zones 1 in the morning might be night out for some but might be the middle of the afternoon for others.
