Why is a timing belt so expensive to change on a Mazda 6 diesel engine 2004?

Because its a Mazda! its normally part of the 75k service which costs anywhere between £500 and £850 depending on which Mazda garage you go to. Plus another potential £150 as apparently the auto tensioner can 'go' when replacing the belt. Mazda want £300 to change just the belt.
But mazdas do seem to be excessively expensive compared to other cars for parts.
My mazda6 diesel 2002 is due for a belt change. But am gonna get my mechanic to do it instead. Belt is £70-£80 plus labour charges.
