There are 8 schools in the Ivy League: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Penn.

These schools banded together to form an athletic conference - sometimes known as the "Ancient 8 Conference" and, more commonly, called the Ivy League. It just so happens that the schools in this athletic conference are among the most selective and academically rigorous in the nation.

Is your question:

What is the difference between individual Ivy League Schools?

or

What is the difference between an Ivy League school and a non Ivy League School?

Either way, its quite a valid question.

There are many differences between all of the Ivy League schools, they all have their unique ways of doing things, as most colleges do. I suggest researching some of the schools to compare and contrast individually.

Now if you were asking about the difference between an Ivy League school and a non-Ivy League school...well, that's an even better question.

Ivy League schools cost more money, they typically have smaller class sizes which may or may not equate with a more intensive and personal interaction with the given Professor.

Then again, you can find small class sizes at a community college too.

Basically, unless you

Were awarded a scholarship to an Ivy League school where they would pay for most or all of your schooling

Or if your career aims are in the business sector, where it would be highly important to market with other future bigwigs...if your future job requires you to 'know 'people'', then an Ivy League school may be something to consider.

Don't let the stereotypes fool you. Ivy League doesn't actually equate with being extremely intelligent or receiving a superb education more than any other college. The only difference in quality of education depends on you. Sure, if you go to an Ivy League school, other people will probably project that stereotype onto you in your life when you tell them where you went. If that's your aim, then by all means. Otherwise, you might as well just go to a good school and then tell people you went to 'Harvard' 'Yale' 'Princeton!'

The origin of this name is unclear, but according to some sources it was originally a "IV League".

On November 23, 1876 representatives from Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Columbia met at a convention to create the uniform football rules. They subsequently formed the IV League. Some people didn't recognize IV as a Roman numeral and spelled it "ai-vee" - hence the name.

The Ivy League is an athletic conference comprising eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. The term is most commonly used to refer to those eight schools considered as a group. The term also has connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism.

Thus, there is no "qualification" per se going on. Ivy League is basically a very old, traditional group of colleges that formed a bond.

In addition, Ivy League schools are often viewed by the public as some of the most prestigious universities worldwide and are often ranked amongst the best universities in the United States and worldwide.

Ivy League:

Brown
Columbia

Is emory university ivy league?

No, Emory University is not an Ivy. The Ivy League is a coalition of eight schools (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale). Technically, the Ivy League is an athletic coalition. However, Ivies are now known as some of the world's best academic schools. When people refer to "New Ivies", they are referring to schools that are of the caliber of those in the Ivy League. Emory would probably fall in this category, but there are only eight true Ivy League schools.

Is Rice U ivy league?

It is important to keep in mind that the Ivy League merely refers to an outdated football conference established in the early part of the 20th century. Members of the "Ivy League" football conference include: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, and Cornell. Stanford, MIT, and CalTech are not part of the Ivy League, even though their academics rival those of the Ivy League schools. Therefore, Rice is not part of the Ivy League football conference. However, its academics rival those of many Ivy League schools. Rice University is considered a "Southern Ivy" and was named a "New Ivy" by Newsweek magazine in 2006 because its academics are just as good, if not better, than those offered by Ivy League schools.
