Remember the talk about the "outer electrons" you learned about? Sodium (Na) has 1 electron in the outer most electron orbital. Calcium (Ca) has, you guessed it, 2 electrons in its' outer most electron orbital. Can you explain the rest to yourself? Remember they had a neutral charge before becoming ionic.

Calcium is metal with 2 electrons in its outer electron shell. When it loses these electrons to become an ion it loses 2 negatively charged electrons which leaves the calcium ion as a double positive chrged ion. Because it only has 2 out of a wanted 8 electrons (-) in its outer shell, making it easier for this element to let go of these two electrons than take on 6 more electrons. This tendency to let two negative charges go (in other words subtracting -2) from its electron count gives the element a positive 2 charge in it stable (comfortable) state.
