It could be argued that cement is a traditional building material. It's first widespread use was by engineers of the Roman empire! A very good example being the cement dome of the Pantheon in Rome which was built in 126 AD.

You may consider concrete as a liquid stone. Easily used to fill any shaped mould. It sets to a hard and durable material, but is NOT strong in tension, and may be brittle.

In a little chemical detail, the CaO resulting from the dehydrating (actually calcining) of limestone, is reacted with CaSO4 and Diatomaceous earth (a natural form of very finely divided silica), and then used as a slurry to help bind an aggregate of sand and gravel.

This forms a complex series of calcium silicates and sulphates, and the longer these are allowed to remain moist, the stronger the concrete will be. The crystals may become larger and more interlocked. This slow drying is vital, and for high strength concrete, 28 days is not too much. [Bridges for example.]

Whilst concrete is poor in tension, if the concrete is bound with reinforcing steel, then the composite product will be also be strong in tension. Based as it is on calcium materials, concrete has poor acid resistance, even to such weak acids as the milk and the waste from cows.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of rcc frame structure?

Reinforced Cement Concrete or ñRCCî is cement concrete that is reinforced with steel bars, plates or mesh to increase the weight capacity of the structure. The advantages of RCC construction are: the materials used are easily available, the structures are durable, and it is fire resistant and is pest safe. The disadvantages include: there is no scrap value, constant checking is required and skilled labor is needed it the construction of the structures.
