Electroplating is done to keep old ,unwanted and cheap metal from rusting example getting aluminium or ironand pouting a nice coat of silver and /or gold to make it noticeable and to keep it from rusting.

Example: For Jewelry, they might want to keep their item cheap, so just electroplate a thin layer of gold over some other material.

Applications for electroplating are many and varied. Essentially, it is a matter of economy of cost and of materials. For example, it is effective and much cheaper to use a copper connector, with a very thin coat of gold, in a computer; than to use a solid gold connector.
