Not usually but items that are prepared meals at the store are taxed and soda pop is also taxed. While no one likes taxes, virtually all places that have a sales tax, while they may not tax food (giving it a special exemption), they do tax sales of just about any tangible personal property or service, and define that to include meals. When exactly food becomes a meal is sometimes weird (for example, in many places, a pre-made sandwich at in a supermarket is food, but the exact same one made custom at the deli dept is a meal. One roll is a meal, but 6 or more is food, etc.). Lettuce, tomato, etc is food (non-taxed), from the salad bar it's a meal and taxable. Literally, in a few NE states the law reads that small marshmellows are fod (presumably used in baking) , but large one are taxable as food/candy. Lord knows what medium ones are! Clearly, something like fast food (or a restaurant dinner) is a meal and subject to the tax - again, almost everywhere.

Many places, a drink that is less than some specific percentage, like 50%, pure juice is taxable, but more than that isn't taxable because it is a food. Produce, lettuce, tomatoes, etc....aren't taxable as food, but if bought off the salad bar, even in the same store and department, it is taxable. Clearly, something like fast food (or a restaurant dinner) is a meal and subject to the tax - again, almost everywhere.

Food usually doesn't have tax on it. Taxes vary from state to state and some foods that are considered luxuries may be taxed in some states.

How much is tax worth?

A tax paid for income taxes is a percentage of total income. Tax varies by how much income a person has. Tax is also paid on items sold in many states. Why do you pay taxes on fast food but not groceries?

That depends on where you live. Some states in the U.S. do not tax groceries. Others do. Where food grocery items are taxed, it is usually at a lower rate than non-food items. One reason that restaurant and/or fast food is taxed higher might be because it is not considered a necessity. People have to eat. They don't have to eat at a restaurant. In a sense, one could consider it a luxury tax. In Ohio: Fast food eaten at the location is taxed just like any restaurant food. Everything you order is taxable. To go food is not taxable but carbonated beverages, specialty coffee and sweetened drinks are taxable even when ordered "to-go" while regular coffee, orange juice and non-sweetened tea ordered "to-go" is not taxed.
