Why is it so hard to accept that a person you have known for over a year is not the person they lead you to believe they were?

People find it difficult to admit that they have been had, been deceived, and manipulated. They feel humiliated, degraded, and stupid. So, they deny it! It is so hard because you fell in love with the person whom you believed they were...not who they really are. It is also hard to accept that the person helped you to believe they were someone they were not. Also, the person has no idea who they are...so they believe themselves to be the person they want to be...unfortunately they fail.
