because the stuff your mind generates is actually sort of like a virtual world. sometimes when your mind dreams stuff it affects what happens in your REAL life, which is why people have wet dreams. You jump because if you dream your falling off a cliff, your brain senses it and wakes you up, because if you hit the ground, your mind actually senses that and damage could come to you.
This sounds like a slight variation on the "Falling" dream. Sleep researchers theorize that falling dreams result from the subconscious mind being aware of "falling asleep" and turning that expression into a dream of literally falling.
It is true that sometimes when you are havine a dream you don't know that it is a dream. When you are having a dream you never wonder whether or not it is a dream. You only wonder that when you are awake. So by the fact that you are wondering that I would say that you are awake and this is not a dream. PS Unless I am just dreaming this.

some people belive that one cannot differentiate between dream awake and dream asleep but as a phylosopher, things done when asleep are imperfect while thing done when awake are perfect. Few days ago, i was reading an anonymous comment on the net there, the writer sited an instance that in his dream asleep, he was dialing a number and he missed out one, while in his dream awake, he dialed the numbers correctly.
There is no British dream........because we're awake unlike the yanks
And in the end We lie awake And we dream We'll make an escape And in the end We lie awake And we dream We'll make an escape Ooh...
This is a good example of the way dreams exaggerate everything. This dream illustrates the dreamer's not wanting to be caught by that particular person. Jumping off the cliff is an overly dramatic way of showing that the dreamer would prefer just about ANY fate to being caught.
look up Lucid Dreaming... its a method used to be "awake" in your dream

"Are you sure that we are awake? It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream." -William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream.
