Limestone is used mainly in the iron making part of steel production where it is added to the iron ore before entering the blast furnace. The limestone reacts with acidic impurities called slag and floats on top of the molten iron where it is skimmed off.

It is. It is used when melting iron ore to remove impurities. The impurities attach themselves to the limestone which is then skimmed off the surface of the molten material, leaving a more pure iron. Without the iron, the steel could not be made.

Limestone is used as a flux to assist the removal of impurities in the steel such as sulphur, phosporous etc. Mostly, limestone is converted (calicined) to burnt lime first in a kiln before being used for steelmaking. However smaller amounts of raw limestone may also be used. The flux, which may also include additions of dolomite, quartz, feldspar etc establishes an equilibrium with the impurities in the steel and so the amounts added needs to be carefully calculated to ensure the correct balance of flux viscosity and chemistry, and steel chemistry is obtained.
