Many people enjoy Classical Music more than baroque in the same way that many people enjoy listening to the latest hits rather than something from 50 years ago. Classical music (from the classical era (1750-1820)) is a lot freer in structure than baroque music (baroque era 1600-1750). The baroque style involves things such as terraced dynamics (ex: going straight from loud to soft, no gradual diminuendos), detached quarter notes, and following different forms, allowing almost no exceptions. As Musical Instruments improved, society changed, and more radical ideas came out, music changed. The classical era still does not allow emotions to rule throughout the expression of the music, but there is a definite structured expression allowed. New tone combinations were put into use, and different instruments were added allowing new highs and lows in the dynamic range. Crescendos and diminuendos are evident here.

Modern or contemporary music is more popular because of the fact that

1. It has been exposed to more people

2. The structure of the songs are more simple (verse, chorus, bridge), and the parts are repetitive in structure depending on the song

3. Lyrics are sometimes easy to sing along to

4. Contains basic major, minor, and seventh (rarely) chords

5. It takes little to no effort to compose

Classical music, on the other hand

1. Is more complex in structure (sonatas, movements)

2. It takes much more time to appreciate than popular music, since Pop Music is more basic.

3. Has more chords being used than the major, minor, and sevenths.

4. The meaning of the music lies on the sounds, harmonies, and rhythms rather than the words, except for Opera.

5. Not alot of people have been exposed to it, except if they are in a school setting, or a concert hall, or ballroom.

6. It takes more effort to compose

I hope this helped out!

Not really because the answer continues the assumptions made by the question without testing them.

Who says "modern or contemporary" music is more popular than "classical" music?

How would you account for people with wide musical tastes who happen to enjoy say, Baroque, The Beatles, Mahler, folk and the sort of arcane techno-music you're likely to find only on programmes like BBC Radio Three's 'Late Junction'? Or are great fans of modern film scores, bebop jazz, or swing, or so-called "World Music"?

And how far back does "modern" go?

How do you know "not a lot of people have been exposed to [classical music]? More likely most of those in that situation have not bothered, or have chosen not, to explore it. All forms of music are there for the listening. You don't need "exposing" to it - though supermarkets do their damnedest to expose you to their piped-music compilers' narrow tastes. You just need to choose to listen to it, whether in the concert-hall or on the radio.

It was a poor question possibly based on a single line of musical taste.

What is the difference between pop and classical music?

Pop Music is modern day music that a large amount of the population enjoys listening to. It is written quite recently and has almost no rules as to how it can sound. Classical Music can actually encompass three large periods of music (Baroque, Classical, and Romantic). It was written in the 1600's to the 1800's (Baroque was the earliest, then Classical, then Romantic). The rules were much more strict than they are now, especially in Baroque and Classical music. Essentially, pop music is popular and modern. Classical music can possibly be considered the "pop" music of centuries ago.

What is the difference between art music and classical music?

Not too sure about art music, but classical music usually takes time within the classical, baroque, romantic, renaissance, and contemporary eras. All classical music is acoustic, meaning no electric instruments, give or take an electric piano, violin, or viola... Art music is a term used to refer to "advanced" music which relies more on formal style and theory. The opposite of art music is popular music. Classical music is a category of art music which includes traditional classical music (this is divided based on the region where it originated) and modern classical music (electronic, experimental, and minimalist music). Art music also includes certain forms of jazz which are considered to be less "popular" and more theoretical improvisation.

When did classical music get famous?

Classical music wasn't as you know it today. Today we have multiple genres spanning the entire music scene of the world. Several centuries ago Classical music was simply music. There was no disparity between what was classical and what was not. Nearly everything of the time was classical therefore it became popular from its inception. In terms of instrumental classical music, that took off at the demise of the Baroque Period and beginning of the Classical period. Rising middle-class wages allowed for a wider range of audience in virtuoso performances and public orchestras. Music was a sign of prestige and therefore those who could not perform at least attended. It was one of the primary sources of entertainment besides plays. Popularity for classical music has dwindled since the 19th century. And there is little hope it will be revived through the few neo-classical artists remaining.

What does 'classical music' mean?

In music, "classical" has two meanings. The generalized term, "Classical Music" denotes art music composed for performance, as opposed to popular songs, rock, or theater music. The more specialized meaning, within the larger category of classical music, denotes symphonies or other types of music composed in the mid- to late-18th century through the early 19th, by Haydn, Mozart, early Beethoven and their contemporaries, known as the "classical period". Alternately, "classic" can just mean a favorite or standard for many years, like classic rock, classic bluegrass, etc.

Was classical music popular before jazz and blues?

It would be more correct to say that classical music existed for quite some time before jazz and blues. All three: Classical, jazz and blues - continue to be very popular. Some jazz musicians (Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and others) had some success combining elements of the two together.

What Differences are there between classical music and popular music?

classical music has very different instrumentation generally, and uses a conductor for some pieces. Also, many times the soloist or star or someone else in the concert does not write the music. Many times, classical music pieces are much longer than popular songs. Classical music generally does not use a microphone, and many popular bands do.
