one of the most important jobs the monks did was bring you a hand written bible,it was the catholic monks who hand wrote The Bible no one else until the printing press was invented , it was the monks who made sure there were no mistakes made and that is why the catholic church was considered the keeper of the bible, so no one would rewrite it or distort it..

Roman Catholic AnswerA monk is important insofar as his life conforms to that of his Savior. He is living out the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. His day is spent giving praise to the Almighty who is worthy of all praise.

Throughout history, monks have been the ones to actually write down stories and legends, and not just spread them verbally. Most of the books we have from the Middle Ages are due to monks writing down important stories or lessons that they had heard.

Originally, they were the educated class. Monks were among the few people who could read or write, and, before the invention of the printing press, were the people who copied out books by hand and kept libraries of information and histories.

The monastic life - also known as Consecrated life and "religious life" - is regulated by the respective Church law of those Christian denominations that recognize it (e.g. the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, the Anglican Church, or the Lutheran Church). Once a Christian feels called to seek God in the monastic life, it needs to be established whether the vocation is as a member of a religious community or as a consecrated virgin, hermit or widow. While many people think of the Christian monastic life (especially that of Catholic monks or nuns) as having "something to do with living in a religious community," its purpose is not always communal living with like-minded Christians. Rather, the purpose is many times perpetual training that is meant to help those Christians who feel called to dedicate their life to God. This is in accordance with the perfect example given by Jesus and following his exhortation to "be ye perfect like your heavenly Father is perfect." This ideal, also called the state of perfection, is expressed everywhere that the things of God are sought above all other things. This can be seen, for example, in the Philokalia, a book of monastic writings. A monk or nun is an individual who has made a public vow to observe not only the Ten Commandments and the law of their respective Church authority (as has every other Christian), but also the counsels of perfection (e.g., chastity, poverty and obedience) and the rules set by the founder of their particular religious order.

A monk lived in a monastery. Monks would have learnt skills such as writing and medicine. With these skills they could have provided services like scribes to write charters or religious texts, provide 'medicine' to the wider public, and they also provided some rudimentary poor relief to the desperate. Some monasteries provided homes for lepers (people suffering from leporasy)
