The first letter of name Neon is 'N' but this the symbol for nitrogen which was discovered and named before neon so 'Ne' symbol was selected for this gas. It comes from the Greek word νέον (neon) meaning "new one"

Neon is from the Noble Gases group on the Periodic Table. Noble gases are the most nonreactive elements for the fact that they have a valence electron of 8. Therefore they do not gain or lose electrons making them exist as individual atoms and not in compounds or as diatomic atoms.
