There is very little plant or animal life to sustain a human community. The extremes of climate and temperature make living there undesirable and non-productive, agriculturally and in other industries.

Much of North Africa is very arid, rocky, inhospitable country. It's hard to farm or even find water. This does not encourage people to settle there. Most of the settlements are on the coast where it's easier to grow crops.
