It's simple, human beings are judgemental. No matter what we do, what campaigns we hold, the fact is that humans will always try to place themselves over others. It's a terrible ideal, but it's true.
To specifically answer your question, the difference between humans in gender and race is very distinct and noticeable. Thus, it is easier to pick out "faults" in someone that has a different appearance.
