Social Stratification is giving a society a hierarchy based on factors such as power, occupation, social status, income and wealth. It is typically a product of privilege, priority and ability.

1. Society must make certain that its positions are filled.
2. Some positions are more important than others.
3. The important positions must be filled by the more qualified people
4. To motivate the more qualified people to fill these positions, society must offer them great rewards.
Social stratification is also universal because everywhere there are different types of groups. You have your group of power. They are the group of people that gets their way, even over the resistance of others. You have another group of people called property. This particular group is for people who own their own things such as builds, house, companies, businesses, ect. Then you have the final group of people called the prestige. In this group people have a lot a respect from great accomplishments. Something like power but not as it.

Social mobility relates to stratification because social stratification is the hierarchical arrangement of society, while social mobility is a person(s) ability to change position in society's hierarchical arrangement. The amount of social mobility in a society depends on the type of stratification system. There are two types of stratification systems: ascription-based and achievement-based. In an ascription-based stratification system a person's class is based on characteristics they are born with. This is what is considered a closed society.There is little-to-no social mobility because you have no control over your birth. In an achievement-based stratification system a person's rank is based on a person's accomplishments. This is what is considered an open society. People have the ability to move up the social ladder through natural talents, or by learning skills.
