How can suicide be Illegal?

The attempt of taking someones life is illegal. Suicide is such an attempt even if it's your own life you are trying to take. Therefore the attempt for suicide is illegal.

That is the case with a successful murder as well. Since is illegal to murder, and suicide is murdering yourself, suicide is illegal.

Some people might push for illegalizing suicide, but that's ridiculous.

Can you arrest someone for killing themselves? Throwing their lifeless body into a prison cell is hardly a punishment or acceptable use of taxpayer money.

Alternatively, you could execute people who try or commit suicide, but if you were to kill them you mine as well just let them commit suicide.

Assisted suicide is a different matter.

The law may overturn reason, but reason may never overturn the law...

Actually there are good reasons for suicide being illegal (and it is in all 50 states). First, it's the willful taking of a human life. Second, people do not have the legal power to "authorize" a suicide -- lifetaking is still a crime (except in very special situations that include self defense, etc.).

Second, it permits the legal system to get involved with how suicides are handled. Things like 48 hours and 72 hour involuntary holds need judicial oversight, and having a law in place makes this possible.

because you are helping that person die. Its sort of like guiding them to there death. You shouldn't be committing suicide and/or helping a person to commit suicide because its just not right. Life is to short and people have there ups and downs but hey that IS life. and yea maybe your life does sucks ass but whose doesn't??? Just because it does doesn't mean you have to kill yourself. there are options you can do to resolve your "black cloud " that's hovering over you making you feel depressed.you can go get help from family or friends and if it's that bad than go to a psychiatrist or therapist. and maybe they may want to subscribe you to medicine because you have either depression anxiety ect... trust me sometimes it feels as though you have a lot of LOWS in your life, just think positive and count all of the "highs" because 60 seconds of anger/sadness is one minute of happiness wasted out of you life.

Another View: Euthanasia, while illegal in most of the United States. IS legal in the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana and to a limited extent in Texas, and bills are being introduced in others to allow the practice. .

Suicide is not illegal because you can not prosecute the person after they have died. It is not encouraged and is a very tragic situation for everyone involved.
