The Eiffel Tower was built in Paris, France as the entrance arch for an international exhibition called Exhibition Universelle which was a "World's Fair' exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Its architect and structural engineer was Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel originally submitted it to the city of Barcelona, Spain for the 1888 Universal Exhibition but was refused because they felt it was strange, didn't fit in with the design and look of the city, and was going to be too expensive of an undertaking. It was intended to be a temporary structure to be torn down shortly after the exhibition closed.
