A universal symbol of freedom and democracy, the Statue of Liberty also celebrates the international friendship of the United States and France. It was given to us as a gift from France. Built to commerate an alliance during the American Revolution, the Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and designated as a National Monument in 1924. We could not have suceeded as well as we did in the Revolution without the aid of our French allies.
