A universal symbol of freedom and democracy, the Statue of Liberty also celebrates the international friendship of the United States and France. It was given to us as a gift from France. Built to commerate an alliance during the American Revolution, the Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and designated as a National Monument in 1924. We could not have suceeded as well as we did in the Revolution without the aid of our French allies.

Anyhow, the statue was completed in July of 1884 in France but the foundation for her wasn't completed until 1886 in America. On October 28, 1886 the dedication of the statue took place after she had been transported from France to the US in crates and then reassembled.
