Because they borrowed money to get out of the recession and if china asks for their money back tomorrow the US goes back into recession.
The united states has what you called bonds which are a promise to pay back the person who has those bonds. China bought more than one trillion of dollars in bonds from the united states. There is many things the US goverement can do to lower that ammount. For example one could be adding more value to the US dollar doing so would mean that chineese currency would be less valuable thus the debt would be less. (correct me if i am wrong) Second the US goverment can do a payment plan to pay back the debt from china.
