The title "Our Lady of Guadalupe" refers to the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the Indian Juan Diego (Quauhtlatoatzin) in Mexico in 1531. She told him that she would be known as "the ever-virgin holy Mary of Guadalupe".

There are many opinions about the reason for this. I like the one that says that this is a Spanish pronunciation of the Nahuatl (an Indian language) word coatlaxopeuh, which means "crushes the serpent", a possible reference to the Virgin Mary herself.

Another possibility is that the Virgin took the name of a venerated statue of the Virgin that was found in Spain near a village named Guadalupe.

When Our Lady first appeared to Juan Diego she told him her name was Our Lady of Guadalupe, or that is what was understood by Juan Diego. When he told the bishop of Mexico City, the bishop took it to mean Guadalupe in Spain, with which he was familiar. You must remember that Juan Diego spoke little Spanish and the bishop spoke little Nahuatl so words and sounds may have become misunderstood on both sides. However, the name has stuck now for nearly 500 years

The Virgin Mary is referred to as Our Lady of Guadalupe because of the apparition she made to Juan Diego near Mexico City in 1531. The name "Guadalupe" itself means (in Nahuatl) "to crush the serpent" which is what she did in order to end the satanical Aztec religion that involved human sacrifices.

AnswerThe Blessed Virgin has, literally, hundreds of titles, each of them enumerating one of her virtues or appearances. The three best know of the later would be Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Our Lady of Guadalupe (if you're an American) or Our Lady of Knock (if you're Irish). For a list of approved (by the Church) apparitions of the Blessed Virgin, please see the link below:

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a title given to the Virgin Mary as she appear to Juan Diego on the hillside of Tepeyac near Mexico City in December of 1531. Juan Diego was walking towards the town of Tlatelolco for Mass and catechism classes. The Virgin also appeared to the uncle of Juan Diego, Bernardino, when she cured him of an illness. Bernardino told his nephew the Blessed Virgin had ordered him to relate to the Bishop in what miraculous manne she had cured him. She also told Bernardino her image was to be known as "Santa Maria de Guadalupe" and thus she has been venerated by this title for nearly five centuries.

According to the Mexican Guadalupe tradition, a poor Indian named Juan Diego saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on 9 December 1531 asking him to have a chapel built in her honour in Tepeyac, Mexico. If historically true, the story seems to have remained unknown for over one hundred years until it appeared in a remarkable book by a priest named Miguel Sanchez.
There also is a much earlier but less well known tradition of the Lady of Guadalupe at Guadalupe in Spain. In this tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to a humble cowboy and ordered him to ask priests to dig at the site of his appartion. According to legend, the priests found a statue at the site, and built a shrine over it. With so many similarities, perhaps the Mexican tradition was influenced by the Spanish one.

According to the Guadalupe tradition a poor Indian named Juan Diego saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on 9 December 1531 asking him to have a chapel built in Tepeyac in her honour. 9 December is, of course, the day after the feast of the Immaculate Conception. 1531 was barely ten years after the Spanish Conquest.

Bishop de Zumárraga at first rebuffed Diego but at the fourth apparition the Virgin instructed him to pick the flowers growing unseasonably on the hill at Tepeyac, fill his cactus fibre mantle with them and go thus to the bishop. When he opened his cape and the flowers fell out, a miraculous likeness of the Virgin Mary was found imprinted upon it. The bishop was convinced - although exactly how he knew this really represented the Virgin Mary is unclear.

The story of the Virgin of Guadalupe attracted no attention at the time, and seems to have remained unknown for over one hundred years. Only then did a remarkable book, written by a priest named Miguel Sanchez, make the image of Mary something which everyone suddenly knew about. It is a matter of faith and trust that Father Sanchez was describing events that had really occurred so long before. If so, then it would seem that the Virgin of Guadalupe was the Virgin Mary. Others say that the story of Guadalupe was created to assist in converting the Indians to Christianity.

According to the Guadalupe tradition, a poor Indian named Juan Diego saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on 9 December 1531, at the place in Tepeyac where there had been a temple of Tonantzin, "Mother of the Gods". She asked him to have a chapel built there in her honour. This date is the day after the feast of the Immaculate Conception and 1531 was barely ten years after the Spanish Conquest.

Continuing the tradition, the bishop at first rebuffed Diego but at the fourth apparition the Virgin instructed him to pick the flowers growing unseasonably on the hill at Tepeyac, fill his cactus fibre mantle with them and go to the bishop. When he opened his cape and the flowers fell out, a miraculous likeness of the Virgin was found imprinted upon it. The bishop was convinced and the chapel was built. The Lady of Guadalupe had for some reason wanted a chapel, and one was built.

But only in 1648 was a book about it written by a priest named Miguel Sanchez. Whether the legend even existed very much prior to 1648 is a matter of speculation, but suddenly everyone knew about the image. Some say the legend of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a Christianised Tonantzin, created with the supposed purpose of encouraging the conversion of the indigenous population of early Mexico.
