Well because Columbus, is the largest city in Ohio. Columbus also lays on the Scioto River, a major trading port back in the early 1800s.

Also Columbus was not the first capital of Ohio, It was Chillictohe, then Zanesville, followed by Chillicothe then Columbus.

It was designated as a suitable location near the center of the state in 1812. It is at the confluence of two important rivers, the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers.

The original capital was at Chillicothe (south of Columbus nearer to the Ohio River), except for a short period at Zanesville. The capital moved to Columbus in 1816.
