The eastern coast of India is more prone to cyclones than the western coast due to several reasons. One reason is the temperature of the sea surface and humidity. The Bay of Bengal receives high average rainfall, which increases the probability of cyclone formation in this region. Additionally, states on the east coast have relatively flatter, plain land as compared to the country’s western coast, preventing any deflection of winds. This makes the long shoreline of Andhra pradesh an easy target for most storms.

In the east coast of India, there is more land and less water, because of which there is more pressure variation. In the west coast there is more water and less land and therefore pressure variation is less. Because of more pressure variation, the east coast is more vulnerable to cyclones than the west coast.

Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are not necessarily stronger than those in other parts of the world. Rather, areas around the Bay of Bengal are more vulnerable. Many of the people in the region are poor and often live in poorly-built homes that are easily destroyed. There are several low-lying areas adjacent to mountains, meaning they are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Bangladesh is particularly vulnerably; it consists of a low-lying river delta and most parts of it are less than 30 feet above sea level. To the north are the Himalayas. Cyclones that strike the area will drop most of their rain as they meet the mountains. The water will then flow directly to Bangladesh and cause widespread flooding.

Do cyclones always cause flooding?

Cyclones do not always cause flooding. Cyclone Tracy, which hit Darwin, Australia in 1974 ,was a classic example of a cyclone that hit violently causing widespread destruction, yet very little damage was caused by rain or flooding. Often cyclones degrade into tropical depressions when they hit land, and this is what causes the flooding, but there was very little rain associated with Cyclone Tracy compared to other cyclones.
