All units are base 10, meaning changing units is a simple matter of moving the decimal place; unlike the imperial system that has a no standard base number and you have to rememeber the right number and recalculate each time you change units.

The metric system is based on the number 10. Every unit change, whether it be larger or smaller, is a multiple of 10.

To change to a larger unit, simply multiply by 10. Do the reverse - divide by 10 - to change to a smaller unit.

All metric units are changed like this.

The key to the simplicity of the metric system is that it counts in base ten. That is, it counts the same way that we count in normal maths. The Imperial and US systems count in threes, twelves, one thousand seven hundred and sixties, etc; but metric is all in tens hundreds and thousands. That's how we count people, cats, apples, everything, so there are no complicated conversions.

100 X 8cm = 800cm = 8 metres.

100 X 8 inches = 800 inches = 800/12 feet = 66 and two thirds feet = 66.667/3 yards = 22.22 yards =22 yards and 7.92 inches.

Metric system easy to use because you need to know only one unit.

For example for length you only need to know meter. Every other value will be defined by SI prefixes (km, cm, mm etc).
