It is large because of the tiny villi which are inside the small intestine. The intestine needs to be big for these tiny things to extract all the nutrients and put them into the bloodstream for energy.

The small intestine is where absorption of glicids, lipids and proteins occur. The absorption of these nutrients is slow and envolves complex processes. Differently, the large intestine function is to uptake water and ions which is a much faster process.

Thus, small intestine needs to be longer.
