I read that when the Presidential Succession Act was drafted in the late 1940s, President Truman thought that elected officials should be at the top of the list rather than presidential appointees. Ironically, about 20 years later the Constitution was amended giving the president the power to appoint a vice president in the event of a mid-term vacancy in the office. However, vice-presidential nominees in this case require the approval of both Houses of Congress, while Cabinet nominees require the approval of only the Senate.
In the same article I remember reading that the reason that the House Speaker is listed ahead of the Senate President Pro Tempore is that either Truman or the author of the bill did not like the person who was Senate President Pro Tempore at that time.
The Speaker of the House is next in line for the presidency if both the president and vice president die because of the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. This law establishes the order of succession after the vice president, and the Speaker of the House is the third person in line because of their position as a senior leader in the legislative branch.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives is next in line for the presidency.
The speaker of the house of representative becomes president.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives
Although the Speaker of the House would assume the presidency if both the President and Vice-President die or are rendered incapable of carrying out the duties of the office, to date this has not actually happened except in fiction.
The Speaker of the House, currently Nancy Pelosi http://www.patriotstoolbox.org/america/presidentiallineofsuccession.htm
the Speaker of the House. The Presidential Succession Act of 1947 established the line of succession in the event that both the president and vice president are unable to fulfill their duties. The Speaker of the House is next in line after the vice president.
The Speaker becomes president.
To be a Speaker of the House, a person must be elected to the House of Representatives. One eligibility requirement for election to the House is that the person must be a citizen. So there can never be a Speaker of the House who is not a citizen of the United States. Someone who can be Speaker might not be elligible for the Presidency, for example f that person was a naturalized citizen, or not yet old enough to meet the Constitutional age requirement for the Presidency. In that case, the Speaker could not become President if both the President and Vice-President are unable to serve. The succession would skip the Speaker and devolve upon the President ProTempore of the Senate.
The Speaker of the House is next in succession. However, note that the House Speaker would become president only if the President and vice-president died within a very short time period. Ordinarily, the one who died would be replaced.
If the president dies the vice president is responsible for stepping up as president. The vice president will do everything the president had previously done.
If the presidency is vacancy. the VP becomes president and and new VP is promptly appointed . If the president and VP both die at once, the Speaker of the House becomes president.
