The Periodic Table is named so because the elements are aligned in 'periods'.
But it probably works the other way round. The Periodic Table has that name because it arises from Mendeleev's formulation of the Periodic Law, which he stated as
"When the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic weight, their chemical properties recur as a periodic function".
The modern Periodic Law is the same except that "atomic weight" has been replaced with "atomic number".
