There is not really a devil, but there is a need for belief in the devil. Without the devil, it would be hard to explain the existence of evil in the world without accepting that God allows evil to exist.

The devil exists in religious belief because this exonerates God for the existence of evil.

The Bible is a history of God's dealings with mankind from the beginning of creation. It contains the reason for the situation in the world today, as well as the positive hope for mankind's future. The "devil" plays a role in this and, according to the Bible, is decidedly real. Long before the earth was ever created, God created many spirit creatures called angels (Job 38:4+7, Psalm 104:4). They all had free will, and were all perfect and loyal servants of God until ONE chose to rebel. The word "devil" means slanderer, and the word "satan" means opposer, and he was both of these things. He opposed God's will, and lied about him in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-6), slandering his name. He was not created this way, but rather MADE himself this kind of person. In a roundabout way, the scripture at Ezekiel 28:13-15 gives a synopsis of what happened. It's likening the King of Tyre to the devil, and describes what happened. Jesus spoke directly to him (Matthew 4:10) and he was cast to earth (Rev 12:7-9+12) where he continues to try and turn people away from God(James 1:14+15)(1 Peter 5:8+9). God has not yet destroyed him because there were issues raised that need to be settled, but we are warned about him (2 Corin 2:11)(2 Corin 11:13+14)(James 4:7) and soon he will be gone. (Psalm 37:10,11,29)(Revelation 20:1-3)
