It was an important position on the Banks of the tyne being the gateway to the north. Some historians say the Romans had a fort near by on Collingwood street. This is quite plausable as Hadrians wall ran through the town on the way to Wallsend. Indeed population grew as coal was discovered but had been mined there by the Romans then later the Saxons and then Normans.
