Why is there no more stories after defeating Elite 4 the first time in Pokemon Fire Red?

You must collect either 50 or 80 Pokemon in your pokedex as "obtained" (little pokeball next to em), then defeat the Elite Four to unlock a little side-story.
Theres only so much story-line they can put in the game anyway.
