Microsoft Windows is the most popular operating system for several reasons:
a. Its progenitor (MS-DOS) was offered with every IBM PC back when IBM produced
personal computers, making MS-DOS the defacto OS for business and home use.
b. As IBM left the PC business and IBM-compatible PCs became the market standard,
business (and home PC) wanted their software (in which they'd invested training
time and also many hardware dollars) to continue to run - making an OS like
MS Windows look like a good investment, and so PC manufacturers began to
pre-install the latest version of MS Windows with every PC sold - a practice which
continues to this day.
The lastest version of Windows (Windows Vista) has lost a great deal of
market share (approx 39% of new PC sales) when compared with the previous
major version of MS Windows (Windows XP), which sold pre-installed on
approximately 89% of newly-purchased PCs. The numerous reasons for this

Answer When Bill Gates started to develop Windows he made the software information free to developers of software. Steve Jobs at Apple sold the OS software information.… So, most software developers decided to make software just for Windows OS since it didn't cost anything. Additionally, Windows was the choice operating system on the PC line of products which was in the early '80s one of the most affordable personal computers of similar capabilities. This was combined with great marketing efforts on behalf of Microsoft. Also, Microsoft has won the battle for the most popular productivity suite with Office, and has more or less bundled Office with Windows ever since, enhancing the popularity of Windows too. Part of Microsoft's marketing effort has been directed not only at the end-user, but also at developers (by trying to motivate them to write software for windows instead of other OS's) and hardware vendors (motivating them to pre-install Windows on new PCs). All in all, Microsoft's aggressive and shrewd marketing and commercial strategies have been instrumental in securing an early lead for Windows. More recently, competition is more intense for Windows, but inertia plays a very large role in preserving Microsoft's lead, as people and corporations often experience significant difficulties in switching to new operating systems and different applications that come with them. Well I don't know popular as in 'I refuse to use any other even if it was available' But Windows is the most used through out the world, since Bill Gates got there first. Cont…rary to popular belief, Apple isn't really close, probably about 30 percent, though it could be more popular than that in America which is why it seems like Apple can compete. But really Windows is without a doubt King, though Microsoft really dropped the ball on Vista and who knows about the next one, so there's no real guarantee that Windows will not have more competition or become less popular, but even then most people know it and are familiar with it, so that's why it will still be used a lot even if something else besides Apple comes along. Windows, because the world is full of poor people who can't afford Macs, and since they're poor, they haven't been able to afford a good enough education to know about Linux. Therefore, Windows is an alternative OS. You have to be poor and stupid. *Equips flame shield* (MORE)

Because that is what we were all introduced to with mass-marketing in the 90's. Had Apple been more commericialized and had big-money behind them, they would be the leaders in… world-wide computer technology. Bottom line......it's about money and ambition. (MORE)
