There are many ways to help you speed up your computer. You first need to do some basic clean up measures. Before you do each step, you can set a Restore Point, in case there are problems.

  1. Move ANY large files in My Documents to an External Back up Drive. Drives are very cheap now for large sizes.
  2. Remove files you don't need from your Desktop. Delete Shortcut icons on your Desktop that you don't use. Run the DeskTop Wizard.
  3. Look for any programs you rarely or never use and uninstall them. On WinXP you do this through Add-Remove in the Control Panel. Turn off and re-start your PC after removing programs. NOTE: ONLY remove what you know that you know. You can Google program names to find out what it is.
  4. Run your Anti-Virus and take the actions it recommends to heal any viruses.
  5. Run a free anti-malware program, like SpyBot Search and Destroy or Malawarebytes. These take 5 to 15 minutes to run.
  6. Use a free program like CCleaner to get rid of Temporary Application Files and Temporary Browser Files. CCleaner has 2 main tabs. UNcheck everything, and start small. Checkmark Temp Files for ALL browsers--run Analyze first. Click on Options, then Cookies. On the LEFT are all cookies. Right-click and choose Intelligent Scan. That will SAVE your frequent log-in cookies. You can also look through the cookies and manually save certain ones. Now click Clean. Next, do ONE Application, like Adobe Temp files. You can do Analyze first until you get comfortable seeing what CCleaner does, then click Clean. Repeat for Applications you know. CCleaner can also clean the Registry BUT you should first know exactly what you're doing before messing with the Registry!
  7. After deleting Temp files with CCleaner, run Error checking on Windows. Right Click on the C drive icon, go to Properties > Tools.
  8. After error checking is done, do Defrag. Right Click on the C drive icon, go to Properties > Tools Select Defrag.

You can also increase the expandable memory (RAM) on your computer if you have more RAM slots.

IF you are knowledgeable about Windows Registry, you can use a program like CCleaner to clean up Registry Leys.

If you can remove these errors and make these simple changes then you will speed up a computer.

If you want to save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration try one of the free applications specifically designed to do everything for you literally in a few minutes. CCleaner is one reputable program. Remember to first research ANY program before downloading and using it. OR visit a Tech Forum and ask questions first.

Computers can slow down for a number of reasons - viruses and malware, insufficient RAM, junk files, badly fragmented disks, registry errors, etc.

Here are some basic steps you have to follow when you notice your computer slow down:

1. Scan your computer with reliable and up-to-date antivirus and antimalware software

2. Check your RAM and upgrade it if it's insufficient. The minimal requirements are 512Mb for Windows XP and 1Gb for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

3. Delete temporary files, browser cache, and other junk files.

4. Defragment your hard drives

5. Scan for registry errors and fix them

6. Uninstall software you never use

7. Disable unnecessary startup items

Steps 3-7 can be done with the help of a good software optimization suite.

Here are a couple of things you can check and fix:

- Remove programs you never use.

- Retrict unwanted startup programs.

- Check if your antivirus or anti-spyware is taking too much resouces.

- Clean overloaded junk files, temparary files etc.

- Check if your computer is suffering registry errors.

Note: by deleting your system 32 and all of its contents, your PC can get crashed and won't start up.

A computer runs "slow" because running applications are consuming too many system resources.

When you first run your computer after installing a fresh operating system, your computer runs "fast". It boots quickly, the GUI is responsive, it doesn't hang or lag and everything runs great. Over time, your computer gets slower as you install programs, and fill your hard drives up with data.

Here are the common causes of a slow and unresponsive system:

1) Too many programs running. Each program requires system resources to accomplish its tasks. The operating system allocates a certain amount of memory and CPU time slices to each process, and if there are too many of them, there won't be enough to go around.

If your system is low on memory, it will move processes into the page file or swap to give other processes the memory they need to complete their tasks. As the page file or swap resides on the hard drive, this consumes a great deal of time.

If your system is low on CPU resources, modern operating systems will "preempt" processes before they have completed their tasks so that other processes get a chance to run. The effects depend upon the process scheduling algorithm used, but under the worst case scenario, some processes may become "starved" (meaning that they get little or no CPU time at all).

Processes may also require other system resources such as I/O devices (hard drive, network, keyboard, mouse, display driver) which must be shared. Too many processes sharing these resources results in slow downs.

To see which processes are press the Ctrl+Shift+Escape keys on Windows for the task manager, or execute "ps -el" on a *nix terminal. Using the task manager, you can end unneeded processes, stop services and see basic CPU/Memory/Network performance information. For *nix variants such as Mac OS X and Linux, you can use the "kill" command from the terminal to... kill unneeded processes.

Be aware that "killing" a process can prevent it from ending properly. Files which it has open could become corrupted and the next time you run it, it could start up in an inconsistent state. Always try to close processes normally before you "end task" or "kill" them.

2) Heavily fragmented hard drive. Conventional hard drives utilize read/write heads which sit on top of a spinning magnetic disk which contains magnetically encoded data. Please realize that data is located at physical locations on the hard drive, and can only be read/written to when its location is underneath a read/write head. If data is scattered across multiple locations, the hard drive must wait until each location runs underneath the read/write head before the entire I/O operation can be completed.

To reduce the amount of fragmentation on your hard drive, use a modern file system such as NTFS or ext3/4 which defragment themselves on the fly. However, even these file systems can become fragmented if they are filled close to capacity. If this happens, delete unused data/programs and manually defragment your hard drive with a utility. Windows comes with a built-in defragmenting utility (My computer-> Right click a hard drive/partition -> Properties -> Tools -> Defragment. This utility will tell you how badly a hard drive is fragmented and will let you manually defragment them).

Note that solid state drives (SSDs), flash drives and RAM drives are all random access and as such framentation does not affect them. Defragmenting them is pointless and can even reduce the lifetime of a SSD/flash drive.

3) Malicious programs may be hiding on your computer, consuming precious system resources. A malicious program is generally a process just like any other program. As such, it competes for resources on your system and receives memory, CPU time slices and I/O resources just like a normal program. The only problem is that a malicious program isn't carrying out any useful task, and may even be harming your system, stealing personal information or using your computer to carry out attacks on other machines. Many people recommend that you install an anti-virus to remove malicious programs, but this is almost never helpful. The only way to be certain that your computer is free of malicious programs after it has become infected is to reinstall a fresh operating system.

4) Rarely, some process may not only compete with each other for resources, but actively fight each other. While you might expect this behavior from malicious programs, you can also observe this behavior from certain anti-virus products. Some anti-virus products exhibit root-kit like behavior in order to prevent malicious software from interfering with their operations. Unfortunately, if you have multiple anti-virus products installed which exhibit this behavior, they will fight each other for control of the operating system.

As such, it is important to only have a single full fledged anti-virus program installed at any time. It is OK to have multiple programs which do not run in the background, and only scan your computer when you tell it to.

5) Software errors. The software on your computer could have installed incorrectly, been configured incorrectly or may have just simply become outdated and no longer functions correctly. A good way to get a good idea of whether your computer is being bogged down by software errors is to use the Windows Event Viewer, "eventvwr.msc". The "critical" and "error" events can *help* you identify applications which are not functioning correctly. This requires a certain amount of technical, debugging and troubleshooting skills so this may not be helpful to everyone. However, it is listed for completeness.

Be very wary of programs which claim the speed up your computer or improve performance. "Registry cleaners" frequently corrupt the registry, which cause more problems than it solves. "Optimizers" may disable important software, such as anti-virus programs. Even worse, these programs are frequently "trojans" - malicious programs which masquerade as beneficial programs. They frequently promise amazing and fantastical results in an effort to tempt you into installing them. The end result can be disastrous not only for your system, but also for you. They can steal from your bank accounts, steal your identity and take control of your computer. Some will even take your computer hostage and hold it for ransom - disabling your computer until you pay money.

Most importantly, you can always make your computer run faster by re-installing your operating system by using either your system recovery partition, system recovery disk or operating system disk. This is the most effective way to make your computer go fast again without spending money on a new machine. Many people decide to reinstall their operating system regularly, not only as a means to keep their machine operating in peak condition, but also to help protect them from malicious programs which could have been installed in a moment of weakness or due to a unpatched security vulnerability.

In conclusion, follow these simple steps:

1) Limit the number of active processes on your system at any given time

2) Don't fill up your operating system's hard drive/partition close to it's full capacity.

3) Be careful about the files you download and install

4) Only install a single anti-virus program. Multiple anti-virus programs will conflict with each other, reducing their effectiveness and seriously slow down your computer.

5) If all else fails, start over from scratch by installing a fresh operating system. It is amazing how much faster your computer will run after a fresh install!

It depends what you mean by 'slow'. If it seems to take ages to access programs on the hard drive, it may need defragmenting. Also - removing unused programs from the hard drive will give the computer more space to work with. Running a program like CCleaner will remove unwanted or redundant items from your computer. Adding extra RAM will also give yor computer more free memory to use.

If you are talking about Computer Viruses try the following:

1. Reboot your computer.

2. Delete the file(s) where ever they may be stored, if you know where they are.

3. Either way, use a virus protection system or virus fighting program, which will help you identify and get rid of any viruses.

4. If this doesn't work, you can: (A) try to get important data off your computer, maybe use a data recovery program then proceed to step 5 or (B) get professional assistance and if they can't help return to option (A)

5. Scratch load/reload your computer. This means to reload the entire OS (operating system). This event will delete all files on your computer, any external hard drives, flash/thumb drives or hard drives that were not compromised will also have its data deleted and reloaded if it remains connected during the scratch load. Most Operating Systems come on a CD which you would use to scratch load it.

____

If you are having a hard drive issue it may be best to just get a new computer and do a data recovery on your old computer. You might be able to get away with just a new hard drive but it is suggested that you have a professional assist you.

____

If you don't know how to repair a computer then you should take it to a computer repair store or to someone you know that knows how to do the repairs.

____

It's not something that can be explained how to in just one sentence or paragraph. The problem in the computer is variable based on the many parts and software installed on it.

You can buy books on computer repair, read them and work on a computer you consider disposable in order to try different things without losing information you need.

Also, there may be one part or other you want to specialize in, either software or hardware. You can do both, but it will take more time because there's so much of both. You can go to school to learn this and naturally it will cost you a lot of money. You can teach yourself but it will take more discipline. In either case, to learn on your own or go to school you'll have to go to an outside testing facility for certification. Certification tells others that you've been tested by an organization or something like it and passed the test to prove you have the industry standards down pat.
