There can be a couple of reasons for your idle being eratic. one of which might be the carb. try cleaning it with carb and choke cleaner. if that doesnt do anything check all of your fuel lines lots of times there might be a small plug which would be slowing the fuel and not letting as much get to the carb. also check your fuel mixture screw.

it sounds like your low on freon. the idle kicks up to comensate for the extra load from the compressor . if its low on freon the compressor short cycles causing the eratic idle
