That way if one Country, say, China, has a surplus of a certain item, say, rice, and the US has less of that and more, um . . . titanium than China, if they hadn't and refused to cooperate, than people in the US might starve, and foundations in China would topple and kill millions of people. If they cooperate, than those things would not happen.

Countries must cooperate in order for world trade and global competition to thrive because it creates a good neighbor relationship. This helps to ensure that when one country has an over abundance of one product or good they will supply for the needs of Another Country or region.

adam smiths theory of international trade -each country that can produce a certain good or goods with the highest efficiency or lowest cost and with a surplus can trade it for a good or goods in which in the very same manner another country specializes. this means a country has absolute cost advantage with respect to that good or goods.

david ricardos theory of international trade- a country may be the most efficient in producing all its goods but by concentrating its resources on certain goods in which it has higher cost advantage compared to other countries and leaving some goods for other countries to produce where they have least comparitive disadvantage so then both countries trade and gain!

There are lots of reasons. It can help to promote better understanding among the countries. Countries can learn from the experience of others. For some things it is easier if they work together to tackle a problem, like international crime. Countries can help do things or provide things for another country, leading to trade. Small countries can work together to create more influence for themselves. There are lots of other reasons countries cooperate. It is like people cooperating to help each other.
