Muscles basically can only "Pull".

That is why muscles attached to the skeleton are either Extensors (pulling the top of a joint to extend it) or Flexors (pulling the bottom of a joint to fold it back down).

Without a skeletal system, the muscles would have nothing to pull against.

Additionally, the skeletal system (especially the rib cage and the skull) protect vital internal organs such as your heart, lungs, and brain.

The muscles work with the skeletal system the way a lever works with a pulley. The application of force is much more efficient due to the presence rigid element within the system.
