The polar regions have six months of day and six months of night because at the North Pole during the six summer months , the sun never completely sets ; and during the six winter months , it never rises over the horizon.

The North and South Poles have either no night for around six months of the year during summer, or complete night for six months of the year during winter.

This is because, during summer, the sun is basically permanently above the horizon for half of the year, due to the tilt of the earth on its axis. If Earth was positioned upright with the Poles in a vertical position, then the North and South poles would have daytime and night-time separated by light and darkness, just like the rest of the planet. However, because it is tilted and it rotates around the sun every six months one pole or the other has to always be in the shadow.

What is actually seen from the point of view of an observer is that, after the Springtime equinox (Vernal equinox) the sun seems to rise and set a little further north each day. It eventually reaches the point where it is setting and rising almost due north. For some weeks on either side of the summer solstice, it makes a complete circle, skimming but not touching the horizon, and at midnight, the sun is in the north.

After the autumn equinox, the opposite happens and the sun appears to rise and set further and further south each day. As it approaches winter, it rises and sets almost due south, barely being seen above the horizon. In winter, it does not appear above the horizon at all, and this is what is known as the period of winter darkness.

The sun rises once a year at the poles, and sets once a year there. Sunrise and sunset are defined as 'the orb being bisected by the horizon'. The 'true' yearly sunrise and sunset only occur at the poles.

When you move away from the poles, the number of sunrises and sunsets increase, depending on how far away from the poles you move. As well, the sun's distance above or below the horizon changes, again, depending on your location away from the poles.

Let's see if I can sum it up for you . . .

-- From about March 21 until about September 22 . . .
. . . . . Every place north of the Arctic Circle has a period of at least 24 hours
when the sun doesn't set.
. . . . . At the north pole, the sun doesn't set during the entire six months.
. . . . . Every place south of the Antarctic Circle has a period of at least 24 hours
when the sun doesn't rise.
. . . . . At the south pole, the sun doesn't rise during the entire six months.

the earth is tilted at an angle of 66 1/2 degrees as a result the south pole mostly stays away from the sun that is why there is six months day and six months night in south pole

Where do the sun sets for six months starting September 23?

North Pole 70% Sure OR South Pole 30% Sure Since the spring and summer months in the southern hemisphere begin at this time of year onwards, you would have to be at the North Pole, although I believe the total lack of sunrise and set is much less than a full six months. The days are very short, either side of the total night days. The other possibility is the planet Mercury where the nights are about that long.
