As of 1867 Great Britain was responsible for the foreign policies of her colonies in territories that were to become parts of Canada, as well as for their defence. This was a considerable load on the British treasury and Great Britain wanted the Canadian colonies to become independent. At the same time, Canadians had been subjected to a number of major and minor military incursions from the United States and some of them therefore sought unification as a path towards strengthening their defences. Many Canadians felt stronger ties to the British Empire than to the United States and therefore did not wish to attach themselves to the United States.

Assertions like these cannot be proven exactly. They can be substantiated either by reading the opinions of prominent historians who have studied the period or by making a careful person study of the available historical documents oneself.

Did Canada break away from another country to become independent?

Not so much break as don't let the door hit you on the way out. Britain had been making more than a few suggestions that Canada should be taking care of things themselves. So when Canada Confederated they were quick to rubber stamp it. As to Independent, well lots of people would suggest Canada is far from independent.

Why did conflict and civil war occur after many African nations became independent?

There was conflict and war because none of the southern farmers and businessmen wanted their slaves to become independent and free. They wanted them to serve them, to be their property. But Abraham Lincoln and the rest of the Northerners thought that slavery was horrendous, so they declared war. Years and years later, even after the slaves were free, the African American and Africans were still not as free as they should be. Quite a stupid situation if you think about it.
