The only time it's necessary to rug a horse is if your showing in the winter and don't want the horse to grow thick hair, if the horse has no shelter (not recommended) or if your horse is really wet and shivering

There are multiple reason to rug or blanket your horse. There are also just as many reasons not to, so always be open minded and know that each horse is an individual and one way of care is not always the best way for each horse.

Reasons to rug/ blanket include:

1. The horse is being shown and must be clipped, thus removing the protection from the winter cold, a blanket/ rug provides this protection.

2. The horse cannot regulate it's body temperature properly: This can be due to age or illness and you may need to provide some sort of blanket/ rug for added warmth.

3. Not enough forage: If you cannot provide extra hay in the winter, which is how horses stay warm (by digesting hay/ grass) then a blanket/ rug may be needed to help.

Reasons not to blanket/ Rug:

1. The horse has a full winter coat: Healthy horses with full winter coats rarely need a blanket/ rug.

2. Enough forage is available: If the horse has a thick coat and you provide adequate hay/ grass in the winter you may not need to rug/ blanket.

3. Shelter: If the horse has enough shelter and uses it you may not need to provide rugs/ blankets.

Is it ok for your horse to be in -3 degrees?

This depends. If he is used to this weather and has a nice, long and thick coat, he should be fine. You should always have some form of shelter in his paddock You can rug him if you wish, but it is not necessary. Think - what conditions would he be in in the wild? If your horse is clipped, or has a fine coat, you should provide him with a rug and definitely shelter.
