Because like the person below me said. It's like killing homeless people. You'd want to give them a chance, not just throw them away because they haven't got a home. Dogs and cats don't choose to be homeless, it's just a sad fact what people can do. People are who to blame when it comes to that. They are living; breathing things too, don't forget that. Homes can be found for them, maybe someone would like to adopt them? That's what animal rescue centres and rescue people are all about.

Sometimes, though, stray animals could be diseased or exceptionally violent and must be professionally euthanised. You still shouldn't kill them, but if you want to help, should probably call someone to get it. It can then be taken to a vet, and if it is ok, it can be taken to a shelter to be adopted.

This question is one that invites opinion. Such a question always has a yes and a no answer, depending on who you ask it to and what their reasons are for such an answer.

Those that say no have the following reasons:

  • It's cruel!
  • Humans are not naturally meat-eaters. Our teeth and hands are not designed to kill animals for meat, and our digestive tract, particularly the small intestine, is designed for digesting plant matter, not meat.
  • All animals, be they human or non-human, deserve to live.
  • Animals are sentient beings just like humans and fear death the moment it is upon them. They have as much want to live as we do, and we should not be upholding speciesism over them because of the "moral" fact that we have been "made" superior over them. Humans are no more superior over a dog than a lion is over a bear or a pig over a cat.
  • Slaughtering animals is equivalent to murdering them. It's the act of taking a life away that deserved to live because it wanted life, not death.
  • Meat tastes disgusting anyway. And it's unhealthy for you!
  • Slaughtering animals is bad for the environment.
  • Over half t of the plant foods that could feed humans are feed to live stock.
  • Animal agriculture uses a lot of water.
  • Animals raised for food are 'protein factories in reverse'. They consume much more protein through grains and soy than what they produce.

Those that say yes have the following reasons of saying such a thing:

  • It is the cycle of life. In the wild, animals are killed for their meat by other animals. It's not a matter of whether it's cruel or not, it's just how the Earth and Mother Nature works. Yes, in human concepts Mother Nature can be cruel, but that's Life.
  • Humans are omnivores, which DO make us able to eat meat. Just because our small intestine is at a similar length to herbivorous animals doesn't mean to say that we should skip over the fact that our stomach is built for digesting meat. We do not have a huge cecum nor a multi-chambered stomach to digest plant matter (we don't even have a functional cecum anyway!), so how can it be said that we are natural plant eaters? And just because our hands and teeth are not built like a tiger's doesn't mean to say we are so helpless that we cannot defend ourselves with tools. Humans have been making tools for self defense for a millenia, using them, initially, in killing and cutting up animals to eat whenever the opportunity presented itself. The invention of fire has also enabled the evolution of the kind of teeth we are armed with today.
  • In the wild, prey animals fight to live as well, but those lions have to eat. It is a natural thing to say that a life has to be sacrificed in order for a higher-order species (a.k.a a predator) to eat. Yes, all animals do deserve to live, but they don't and cannot live forever.
  • Saying that slaughtering animals is murder is like saying that lions are serial killers because they kill zebras and wildebeest so they can live. Again, killing an animal for food is a fact of life. In a survival situation, humans cannot be living off of plants for survival; they would starve to death. If a vegan was forced to survive up in northern Canada in the middle of winter for a few weeks, that person would either have to realize that he/she is going to die soon, or have to sacrifice the life of a rabbit or caribou in order to live to be rescued.
  • Meat, when it comes from the right source and comes from an animal that was raised the right way, is actually very healthy for you. It is high in iron, vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, etc., and is beneficial for keeping up your strength and endurance.
  • Conventional means of growing vegetables is just as bad for the environment as growing livestock. The amount of land, fertilizer and fuel that has to be used for growing vegetables is amazing. And then there's the fact that a lot of vegetables and fruit are wasted because they are not aesthetically pleasing or have spoiled due to improper storage.
  • Meh, if it breeds it bleeds.
  • The most common use of "excessive water consumption" is at the feedlot and at CAFO dairy farms, and when you include the raising of crops for livestock consumption. It's a different story when watering cattle or sheep on dryland pasture where they are not fed grain and crops are not irrigated.
  • Livestock like cattle and sheep can be grazed in areas where crops would either do poorly, cannot be grown because of inaccessibility, or simply not grow at all. Such livestock can be grazed according to how the climate and weather co-operates for that year, with no irrigation required.
  • Crop agriculture mines the soil of its nutrients every time it is collected and harvested. Livestock that are put on the land put those nutrients back in through their feces and urine. Having livestock also enables a farmer to rotate his fields so that he can have it in pasture for a few years to regenerate the soil before putting it back into crops again.
  • Eating meat and slaughtering animals for food is as old as Time itself. Aboriginals ate meat on a daily basis and did not suffer from health problems or obesity like we do today (which is primarily due to how we raise and what we feed cows and pigs in the first place). The Inuit and the Eskimo are a people that, even still today, thrive on only meat that they catch and kill, be it caribou, fish (like Arctic Char) or seals. And they eat it raw, as it is better to eat meat raw up in the Arctic than cooked because it keeps you warm better. Plus there's no need to start a fire when you have nothing to start a fire with on the Arctic plain full of ice and snow!
