Why was Joseph Stalin notable?

Joseph Stalin revolutionized the Soviet Union, and was extremely key in the defeat of Germany during the Second World War. His effects are still seen today. Russia modern day youth has found a strong liking for Stalin. And had Germany won the war, it would undoubtfully be a very different place.

He also initiated the Cold War, which although recently ending, still has a thriving effect on the world from the turmoil it left in its wake.

Joseph Stalin is second only to Hitler in being the worst dictator in world history. He executed Communist Party members in the USSR, with no mercy. His policies caused famines and deaths along with a reign of terror never seen before in Russia or in the USSR. He helped Hitler start WW 2 by signing a Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact. He invaded eastern Poland as Hitler took control of the east portion of Poland.It can be expected that the thousands of Party members he jailed, exiled or executed, are small compared to his horrific policies and crimes against non-communist Russians. He was antisemitic as well.

He used forced labor in the USSR, which is rarely discussed.

It is not a mistake that his body was removed from the tomb he shared with Lenin in Red Square.

It was done because of the atrocities he committed in Eastern Europe and within the USSR.

As an aside to Stalin apologists, there is the example of Poland. For years it was widely known about the atrocity he initiated in Poland. It was finally proven when Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev made public the KGB files that proved Stalin had 15,000 Polish military officers and soldiers summarily executed in eastern Poland when the Soviets occupied Poland.

He industrialized the USSR at the cost of many lives. Hitler re-industrialized Germany from the sad state it was in too. So Stalin and Hitler share that.

Stalin also created a cult of personality along with his terror. Even Hitler did not have a city named after him. Stalingrad?
