Many malicious programs will not make themselves known when they enter your machine and may operate without your knowledge, sometimes by the time you realize you have a problem serious damage has already been caused.
It's important to install an antivirus and update it because viruses are being innovated and adapted all the time. As soon as a company updates its antivirus capabilities, often new viruses are already being created and circulated. Because of this, it is important to regularly update so you will have protection from the latest threats. There are many different antivirus programs, many of which are inexpensive and work well, but there are free ones as well such as AVG Free. free.avg.com
